Ministry of Ideas Podcast on Heathenry

Ministry of Ideas is a podcast dedicated to investigating and illuminating the ideas that shape our society. It is an initiative of the Religious Literacy Project at Harvard Divinity School.

In Episode 23 (July 1, 2020), the podcast focuses on Heathenry, specifically the divide between inclusive Heathenry and folkish/exclusionary Heathenry.

Much of this podcast stems from the research work of NYU journalism and religious studies student (now graduate), Robyn Lanz.

Robyn contacted Rob Schreiwer back in 2016 about using HAH (primarily), The Troth, In-Reach, and Urglaawe as case studies for her Master’s thesis: Mediating Heathen Identities: How Adherents of a Small Neo-Pagan Religion in America Engage with Formal Media Structures in Attempt to Legitimize and Discredit Specific Identities in America’s Public Discourse.

There is indeed an imbalance of reporting on Heathen-related topics in a manner similar to how anything related to Islam is generally handled in the media.

Robyn began to collect inform and data by coming down from NYC to the Philly area for our Pubmoots, for Distelfink’s rituals, and for interviews. She attended Frith Forge as a journalist. She observed HAH activities as a journalist in various contexts, including the Walk Against Hate in Philadelphia in 2019.

She also attended the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 2018 for the HAH presentation.

Due to covid, the NYU students’ first drafts of their theses were approved, which means Robyn is still editing it for future publication. The first draft made some excellent points, particularly about how she had been advised to use the folkish/Nazitru types as the subjects because (Rob's own words here) those idiots cause more of a sensation with their stupidity and audacity than we do with our work to build welcoming communities.

We really hope she gets it published!

In the meantime, enjoy the podcast. Here's the link again!

GoFundMe for Heathen Presence at the World Parliament of Religions

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with the expenses of the trip to Salt Lake City for the World Parliament of Religions.

Your funds will go directly to support the following four attendees of the 2015 Parliament:

- Diana L. Paxson, Elder in the Troth and Gyðja of Hrafnar

- Robert Lusch-Schreiwer, Vice-Steersman of the Troth, Ziewer of Die Urglaawisch Sippschaft vum Distelfink (Distelfink Sippschaft).

- Lorrie Wood, Þyl of Hrafnar

- Angela Carlson, Þórsgyðja, Othala Hearth

Funds are being collected by The Fellowship of the Spiral Path, a pan-pagan umbrella group and 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Berkeley, California. Spiral will receive 5% of the proceeds and administer the funds to Hrafnar (a heathen kindred based in Berkeley and affiliated with Spiral) and Distelfink Sippschaft (a 501(c)(3) non-profit heathen group based in Bristol, Pennsylvania).

Excess funds raised, if any, will be distributed to Hrafnar and Distelfink for their general use.

The group will run an information booth (#878) at which pamphlets and books can be distributed and sold.

At least two heathen related presentations have been accepted for the program:

· “Rebuilding the Altars: Reconstructing Indigenous Pagan Faiths for Today” (Diana Paxson, Rob Schreiwer, Erynn Laurie, Elisheva Nesher, Kirk Thomas and Gwendolyn Reese) October 18, 8:15 a.m.,

· "Staving off Ragnarök: A Heathen Response to Climate Change”, (Diana Paxson) on October 17th at 10 a.m.

This is an invaluable opportunity for The Troth, for Urglaawe, and for Heathenry to have representation among the worlds's religions. Your support is greatly appreciated!

In-Reach a Designated Beneficiary of Philadelphia Pagan Pride Day

The In-Reach Heathen Prison Services program is a joint effort by The Troth and Distelfink Sippschaft to provide books and materials with positive Heathen messages to incarcerated Heathens. Distelfink is currently in communication with inmates and administrators in five correctional facilities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Distelfink visitation takes place in three facilities in New Jersey.

The Troth's inmate and administrator contact has expanded quickly to fifteen states with volunteers conducting visitation in seven states. Recently, the Western Canadian Steward, John T. Mainer, has opened contact with interested parties to expand prison visitation in Canada, thus making In-Reach an international effort.

The In-Reach program is in need of books and materials to send to administrators and chaplains and to place in facility libraries. As such, In-Reach is excited and proud to be a beneficiary of Philadelphia Pagan Pride Day. Heathen materials will go to facilities with which In-Reach is in contact. Donated Pagan materials will be turned over to allied Pagan networks for distribution to facilities in which they work.

A list of needed and requested donations is provided in a link in the press release below.

Folks who are in the Philadelphia area are encouraged to join us on August 31!
